An air cadet squadron was able to carry on camping this summer after Broadacres Housing Association pitched in with a grant.
2337 Northallerton Air Cadets offers young people the chance to experience activities including flying, gliding, shooting and many more.
Cadets help out at local community events and can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which includes trekking and camping.
However, on preparing for this summer’s expeditions, the squadron discovered its camping equipment to be in poor condition.
Squadron Treasurer Sandra Donnelly successfully applied for a £500 grant from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund, which enabled the cadets to take to the hills with five new tents.
“We take good care of our equipment and get good use out of it however the tents were many years old and simply not fit for purpose anymore,” said Sandra.
“We are very grateful to Broadacres. This will allow many more young people to enjoy the challenge of Duke of Edinburgh and other Air cadet expeditions.”
Air Cadets is open to boys and girls aged from 12-20 and promotes good citizenship, an active lifestyle and giving back to the local community. The skills and experience attained can add to a young person’s CV and there is the opportunity to qualify as an instructor and help bring on the next generation of cadets.
The Northallerton squadron has over 40 cadets and meets twice a week. Information for anyone seeking further details or interested in becoming an instructor can be found at https://www.facebook.com/2337sqnATC/ or by emailing training.2337@rafac.mod.gov.uk
