Golf day raises thousands to help Hambleton and Richmondshire children with extra needs

A golf day has enabled a housing association to chip in with a donation of £5,000 for a charity which supports parents of children with additional needs in Richmondshire and Hambleton.

Each year, Northallerton-based Broadacres stages a golf day to raise money for its charity of the year.

This year’s charity, chosen following a nomination process involving Broadacres’ staff, was Parents and Carers of Special Children (POSCH).

This a charity set up by a Broadacres’ resident in 2014 which now supports 280 families where a child or children have additional needs, such as a physical disability, learning disability or autism.

A total of 19 teams, consisting of four players per team, teed off at Rockliffe Hall Golf Club.

Using the Stableford scoring system, the teams played 18 holes of golf, with prizes being awarded to the highest scoring team, along with individual prizes for people who were nearest the pin on a par 3 hole and the longest drive on a par 5 hole.

There was also a ‘beat the professional’ hole, which involved players being invited to pay for the opportunity to get nearer the pin on a par 3 than the professional. The professional won more than he lost and this all went to the charity.

The golfers then returned to the clubhouse for a two-course dinner, raffle and the auction of a prize of a one-night bed and breakfast stay at the luxurious Wensleydale Heifer Hotel in West Witton, near Leyburn.

At the end of the evening, Broadacres’ chief executive Gail Teasdale announced that the event had raised £5,000, which included a successful bid of £400 for the stay at the hotel

Gail said: “Broadacres is committed to making positive contributions in our communities and one of the many ways we are doing this is by supporting a local charity through our golf day.

“We always ask our own staff to nominate a charity they think would benefit from our support and when we learned about POSCH and the amazing work it does with so many local families, we couldn’t think of a better organisation to back in 2019.

“£5,000 is one of the biggest amounts we have raised in recent years, so we are absolutely delighted and would like to thank all the teams which took part, people and organisations who donated raffle prizes and The Wensleydale Heifer for their very generous auction prize.”

Sara Dalton, who received the cheque on behalf of POSCH on the evening, said: “We receive no funding, other than what we can access through grants and fundraising, so the money Broadacres has raised for us with the golf day will help pay towards the cost of running our peer support groups over the next two years.

“We are overwhelmed and would like to thank Broadacres from the bottom of our hearts for their support – it will make an incredible difference.”
