Thirty one affordable homes will be created across Hambleton in a £552,250 package approved by district councillors.
Members of the authority’s cabinet released cash for the homes which include provision for the homeless and a disabled adapted house, and eight new permanent traveller pitches.
Councillors also gave the go ahead for funding for the rural housing enabler programme to continue for the next five years and for the post of a housing development officer until 2022.
Cash for affordable housing comes from two sources – commuted sums given by developers of new housing schemes in lieu of on site affordable homes; and from the council’s own community housing fund, set up in 2018 with government funding.
It is allocated to affordable housing schemes that meet a set of criteria – including bringing empty properties back into use and providing adaptations to existing housing – and are led by registered housing providers.
The schemes approved today will see an existing house bought and adapted in Leeming Bar, eight new gypsy / traveller pitches provided in Sutton on the Forest, eleven affordable homes provided on a development in Ingleby Arncliffe, four homes will be bought and repaired in Easingwold, three new flats in Northallerton will be ring fenced for the homeless, and in Burneston two almshouses and a schoolmasters house will be upgraded, and one new home provided.
“None of these schemes will happen without our cash injections,” said council leader, Councillor Mark Robson.
“By providing relatively small grants to these housing providers we can lever in significant investment for the district. And we can provide homes across a wide range of sectors – for disabled people, homeless households, rural households and the traveller community.
“Providing homes is one of the key objectives of this council as part of its overarching plan to make Hambleton a special place to live.”
