A care charity has thanked a local community group for their support in bringing a Thirsk hospital back into use for local families.

Herriot Hospice Homecare has launched plans to provide hospice care services in the former Lambert Hospital, which includes a four-bedded inpatient unit.

The Lambert League of Friends has pledged a significant contribution towards making this resource available for local people living with terminal illness.

The group has raised funds in support of the hospital since its formation in March 1970.

While this is when the League officially formed, the devotion of a number of key members stretches back even further on both a professional and personal level.

Chief executive of Herriot Hospice Homecare Tony Collins said: “We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of the Lambert League of Friends and their vital role in returning Lambert Hospital to the people of Thirsk and the surrounding area. As key partners in this important venture, I look forward to driving our plans forward together.

“The commitment and devotion shown by the Lambert League of Friends, Hambleton District Council and the surrounding community will help thousands of local people in the years to come. Put simply, this important achievement would not have been possible without their support and we will be forever grateful.”

A Lambert League of Friends spokesperson said: “The League fully supports the project, and each stage will be gone through in line with its constitution as required by charity law.”

Residents of Thirsk and surrounding areas are now being encouraged to get involved and contact Herriot Hospice Homecare if they are interested in helping it move into its new permanent home.
