A band of courageous midwives will be setting off on an adventurous mission to fundraise for the maternity centre in Friarage Hospital.

To mark the centre’s ten-year anniversary, the midwifery team will be tackling 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall path from Friday, September 13 to fundraise for the maternity unit.

The challenging walk, which will consist of a 20-mile walk per day, will be tackled from West to East and follows the UNESCO World Heritage Site from Bowness in Cumbria to Segedunum Roman Fort in North Tyneside.

Preparations are already underway as the midwife team will be joined by their family and friends on this fundraising mission, which will involve overnight camping.

Midwife Sophia Sheppard, who is one of the midwives embarking on this mission, said: “Our Friarage maternity centre’s midwives are excited to walk the full length of Hadrian’s Wall, which consists of 84 miles, for over four days in hopes to raise money for the maternity centre.

“All donations are hugely appreciated and will make a big difference to the services we can provide for future families!”

Led by experienced midwives, the maternity centre offers holistic maternity care to the local and neighbouring communities for pregnancy, birth and beyond, and serves an area of more than 1000square km in the North Yorkshire region.

With one of the few trusts in the region to have a maternity centre run by midwives, the money raised will help the team to create a calm and relaxing space to offer pregnancy and birth relaxation sessions.

The fundraising mission will also help to refurbish the existing birthing rooms by bringing modern equipment to create holistic spaces and a home-from-home environment such as next-to-me cribs, Bluetooth speakers, mood lighting and soft furnishings.

Fundraising manager for Our Hospitals Charity Lisa Meehan said: “Good luck to the amazing midwives on their challenge.

“This fundraising will enable Our Hospitals Charity to provide equipment to our Friarage maternity services, which will be a wonderful addition to the centre.

“We know the local community in Northallerton and North Yorkshire are always so generous and with their kind support we can make a huge difference to patients at the Friarage.”

Individuals looking to help the maternity centre further enhance their services for our local community can visit the official JustGiving page to make a donation.
