A £500,000 scheme which will provide free heating to more than 100 North Yorkshire homes – including around 30 in Hambleton – has been launched.
The county’s Warm Homes Fund will help homeowners and private landlords that currently use inefficient heaters or open fires to get a gas central heating system installed.
Over 1,300 letters have gone to Hambleton households that might be eligible – to qualify residents must either be in receipt of certain state benefits or have a household income below £21,000 and live in a property that is energy inefficient.
Householders that are vulnerable to the effects of living in a cold home could also receive support.
There are also separate grants available to help connect homes to the mains gas network.
“As people can older it can be difficult to use coal or wood fires and can be physically demanding,” said Paul Staines, director of environment
“Many of the towns and villages now have a mains gas supply which can be accessed through this scheme giving owners more choice over how to heat their homes.”
The initiative between North Yorkshire County Council and the district councils of Hambleton, Ryedale and Scarborough, received cash from the National Grid Warm Homes Fund which aims to make households warmer, healthier and cheaper to heat.
The authorities worked with energy experts, YES Energy Solutions and the Warm and Well Team at Citizens Advice Mid-North Yorkshire to secure over £250,000 from the fund, with the district councils adding in another £10,000 each.
YES Energy Solutions is managing the scheme on behalf of the councils – and are promoting the offer and carrying out home surveys in the area.
