Former councillor announces Leeming direct action

A former councillor who is campaigning against a ban to stop lorry drivers from staying overnight on an industrial estate has announced he will hold a new of direct action there later this week.

Andy Strangeway said he has alerted both senior council officers and North Yorkshire County Council leader and Leeming Bar councillor Carl Les to his intention to stay overnight at the village’s industrial estate on Friday to challenge Hambleton District Council’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

Mr Strangeway claims the PSPO is unenforceable for many reasons, such as the council not defining “overnight”, and that he expected motorhome owners to join him in the protest, which he hopes will lead to the authority issuing fixed penalty notices.

He said due to the lack of alternative facilities in the area lorry drivers had little choice but to park on the industrial estate and said any fines issued by the council would be “challenged successfully through the courts”.

Hambleton councillors have said one of the most common complaints they have received relate to the industrial estate being used as an “open toilet”.

The council had said overnight parking there was also leading to issues such as littering, early morning engine noise, refrigeration noises throughout the night and road safety concerns.
