A community drop-in event to promote electrical fire safety is to be held at Northallerton library later this month.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is running the session from 10am to 1pm on Friday, January 21, headed by Laura Hodgson, community safety officer for Hambleton.

Visitors will find out how to register their appliances so that they are notified if there is a product recall and will discover other ways to keep themselves and their family safe.

The drop-in session will take place in a covid-secure space. There is no need to book, but you may be asked to wait if there is a queue.

Laura said: “A large number of house fires are reported each year as being caused by damaged, faulty, or misused electrical goods. A leading cause of electrical fires are electrical appliances not meeting the UK safety standard. Another leading cause of fires at home is plugs that are overloaded or chargers which are left on too long and overheat.”

Another community drop-in session with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is planned from 10am to 1pm on Friday, April 29. To find out more about fire safety please visit www.northyorksfire.gov.uk

County Councillor Greg White, executive member for libraries, said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to help raise awareness of electrical fire safety.

“It is great to see our libraries host a range of events as they often encourage a new demographic through the doors. They are proving to be so much more than a place to go and read; for many they are the beating heart of local communities across the county.”

Northallerton library is back to its regular opening times and customers can browse and select books or use library computers among other services. To contact the library please call 01609 533832, email Northallerton.Library@northyorks.gov.uk or look at its Facebook page @northallertonlibrary
