Moviegoers will be able to sit on comfy couches and have wine and pizza delivered to their seats at the new boutique cinema in Northallerton.
Prestige cinema company Everyman has announced plans to open a four-screen complex at the new £17 million Treadmills scheme on the town’s former prison site.
The 11,000 sq ft cinema will be located above three new restaurant units as the centerpiece of Treadmills.
The scheme is being delivered by the Central Northallerton Development Company (CNDC), a joint venture between Hambleton District Council and property development company Wykeland Group.
Treadmills got planning approval last November and construction is due to start by the summer of 2019.
The complex will include a 21,000 Lidl food store, with devlopers saying that discussions with other potetial occupiers arr ongoing.
Jonathan Stubbs, development director of Wykeland and CNDC board member, said: “We’re delighted to have secured one of the UK’s most prestigous cinema operators for Treadmills.
“Everyman is a perfect fit for the scheme and brings an exciting new dimension and additional choice to Northallerton’s leisure options.”
Everyman currently has 26 cinemas across the UK and, with more openings due in 2019, has more than doubled in size within the past four years.
The company already has venues in Harrogate, Leeds and York.
Crispin Lilly, chief executive of Everyman, said “Northallerton is a really important opportunity for us- we love helping to rejuvenate or galvanise town centres and becoming part of the local community.”
Hambleton District Council deputy leader and member of the CNDCL board, Councillor Peter Wilkinson added: “The Treadmills development will preserve and enhance a key part of Northallerton’s history and heritage; regenerate a large brownfield site; deliver a major boost to the local economy; and bring significant new community facilities to the town and wider community.
“One of those new facilities is the cinema and to be welcoming Everyman to the town is very exciting – they offer a new approach to going to the movies and its one we believe the people of Hambleton will enjoy.”
The Treadmills scheme will include office space for digital technology companies.
The development features retail, residential and office space as well as the civic square, five grade ll former prison buildings, which will be restored and brought back to life.
