A revamp of Northallerton’s Crosby Road car park has been completed, including the introduction of Hambleton’s first electric vehicle charging points in a public parking area.
The improvements are linked to the transformation of the former Northallerton Prison site and the car park is now managed by Central Northallerton Development Company Ltd (CNDCL), which is driving forward the scheme.
CNDCL has invested £150,000 in the car park, which now features four electric vehicle charging points – the first in an off-street car park in the Hambleton District Council area.
The upgrade has also included the introduction of electronic payments, by card and mobile phone, and automatic number plate recognition, while parking bays have been widened and eight disabled and six parent and toddler spaces added.
Completion of the parking improvements follow the start of construction work in October on the first phase of the £17m Treadmills redevelopment, which will see the prison site re-invented as an exciting new retail, leisure and business destination.
CNDCL is a joint venture formed by property developer Wykeland Group and Hambleton District Council to deliver Treadmills.
Yorkshire-based contractor Castlehouse Construction has been appointed by CNDCL to deliver the first phase of the scheme, which is focused on the development of retail units and a car park on the south side of the former prison site.
Later phases will feature residential, leisure and offices, including flexible space for digital technology companies, specialists and freelancers, as well as a showpiece civic square and a four-screen cinema, operated by prestige cinema group Everyman.
Five Grade II listed former prison buildings will be restored and brought back to life as part of the scheme.
Jonathan Stubbs, development director of Wykeland and a CNDCL board member, said: “The enhancement of the Crosby Road car park and the improved facilities now available to drivers are the first benefits to be delivered as part of the Treadmills scheme.
“People will now see a continuing process of positive change as the Treadmills scheme moves forward.”
