Crakehall youngsters recognised after restoring community garden

Four young students have created an oasis of calm in the Pinfold, a community garden in Crakehall, and received a special award in recognition of their community spirit.

Lucy Denton, Hannah Horton and Joshua Kind, all 13, and 12-year-old Philippa Kind, who attend Richmond School, and are known locally as the Fabulous Four, took part in the North Yorkshire Police Lifestyle Challenge.

The initiative aims to give young people aged ten to 17 a positive project to improve the quality of life in their community.

The children attended the special Lifestyle Awards ceremony and were one of five teams from 19 who were selected for a special award and recognised for their efforts, receiving a framed certificate, some trampolining tickets and a group voucher for York Maize.

The Fabulous Four came up with the idea of clearing out the Pinfold garden, which was neglected and overgrown with weeds, and planting flowers for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

They took charge of the project from start to finish, contacting local garden centres for donations of flowers and shrubs.

They worked furiously throughout the month of August, not only starting the hard labour of weeding but also arranging and cooking for a bake sale which, with donations, raised £230 to purchase flowers, a bird bath and some ornaments which have been permanently installed.

Chris McGee, clerk to Crakehall with Langhorne Parish Council, said: “The Pinfold is unrecognisable from the jungle that was there, they have done a superb job.

“The council recognises the efforts the Fabulous Four made on a voluntary basis to improve the quality of life for its residents and thanks them most sincerely for all their hard work.”

Richmond School headteacher Jenna Potter said: “I cannot praise these students highly enough.

“At such a young age to conceive, manage and complete such an ambitious project is incredible.

“They have shown great team spirit, resilience and excellence in everything they have done, and are wonderful ambassadors for our school and their local community.

“I am sure they will continue to take great care of the Pinfold, it comes as no surprise to hear they are already planning to set some winter bedding plants. ”
