Councillors to decide how £6m will be spent to improve Northallerton

Councillors are to look at how a £6m grant to help regenerate Northallerton town centre should be spent next month.

Central government announced that the town is included in allocations from the Future High Streets Fund – a fund set up to renew and reshape high streets to drive economic growth, support areas to recover from the pandemic and help transform town centres into vibrant places to live, work and shop.

Members of Hambleton’s cabinet will look at detailed plans for how this money will be spent when they meet next month.

Officers are currently revising the schemes in the £8.8m business case submitted to Government in July 2020 to take into account the offer of £6,085,013.

Northallerton is one of 101 towns across the UK that went forward for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) funding – 72 of them were successful, six of which are in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Hambleton’s vision for Northallerton moves the town beyond its reliance on the existing retail trade.  It aims to build upon that by creating a better night time economy, opportunities for town centre Living and enabling more cultural and leisure opportunities by repurposing space on the High Street.

The schemes include Treadmills – the redevelopment of the town’s former prison which in phase two will provide a cinema, restaurant, cafes and a post 18 education facility.   On the High Street there will be an emphasis on living spaces above shops as well as increased public realm space around the Town Hall to include new planting and seating, places for outdoor market stalls and events.   Cash for this work is also coming from, the North Yorkshire and York Local Enterprise Partnership and the council’s own resources.

“This is a very exciting time for Northallerton – and for Hambleton as a whole.   We want to develop Northallerton as a place for people to come to linger and enjoy, not just to shop. Ensuring that our new Treadmills development and the High Street work together will also benefit the town,” said Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“This will not only benefit the town but the district.  We are seeing tough times with the pandemic and the new lockdown so to have this good news to focus on our future is great news.”
