More refugees could be housed in Hambleton after councillors agreed to resettle up to 30 people over the next four years.
Members of the district council’s cabinet have today given their approval to continue taking part in the North Yorkshire wide refugee resettlement scheme.
The scheme is part of a national commitment – the Global Resettlement Scheme – which aims to rehome 5,000 of the world’s most vulnerable people in its first year.
North Yorkshire have so far resettled around 150 people – 30 families – annually since 2016, but that number has been dropped to 50 per year over the next four years.
Cabinet member for planning, Councillor David Webster, said that the resettlement scheme has gone well so far with refugees involved in the local community, adjusting to language changes and finding work and volunteering opportunities.
“The current scheme has worked well and received positive support from the local communities – which have welcomed the refugees and are helping them build new lives here,” he said.
“We are confident this approach will continue with this new scheme.”
