Council wins case over £1,000 Thirsk business rates

A Thirsk company has been told it is liable for business rates on eight empty units.

Magistrates sitting in Northallerton and York this week told Juliway Ltd it is responsible for the rates on the units – amounting to more than £100,000 in empty business rates.

Juliway Ltd had challenged bills from Hambleton District Council for business rates on empty properties dating back a number of years saying that it had sublet the units on Thirsk Industrial Estate so did not need to pay.

The court, however, agreed with the council and ordered the company to pay the outstanding business rates.

“This case was about determining liability for the payment of these rates – we believed that Juliway Ltd was the liable party and our case was upheld by magistrates,” said deputy leader of the council, Councillor Peter Wilkinson.

“Hambleton District Council will take all necessary steps to make sure the correct business rates are paid by the correct people – we will not let matters lie. We will endeavor to collect 100% of any business rates due in order to protect the public purse!”
