Council cancels parking tickets issued in error in Bedale

One of the parking suspension signs which were altered.

North Yorkshire County Council says it will not seek payment for parking tickets issued in Bedale today in areas where parking had been suspended ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire visit on Friday.

Notices prohibiting parking between Thursday at 6pm and Friday at 10pm this week were erected last month.

However, earlier this week the stickers were placed over the previous days and times prohibiting parking between 6am and 1pm today.

It is understood the restrictions were put in place ahead of a visit by Christian Prudhomme, Tour de France race director.

Motorists who did not spot the change to the signs then parked in the prohibited areas, with several being issued with tickets this morning by parking wardens.

The issuing of the tickets, by Scarborough Borough Council operatives, was criticised by a number of residents on social media, with several describing the actions as “underhand” and “sneaky”.

However, James Gilroy, transport planning officer at NYCC,

He said: “We won’t be issuing any fines for these parking tickets.

“They were issued in error because some parking signage was incorrectly installed in preparation for the Tour de Yorkshire.

“We have put that right now and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
