A Hambleton village is planning a party to celebrate the first birthday of their community-owned pub.
The Green Dragon in Exelby, near Bedale, was bought and then renovated by locals after shutting in May 2018.
“It really doesn’t feel like a year,” said Peter Simpson, chairman of the Community Pub Co.
“We purchased in October 2018 and did some initial refurbishments to get the pub trading from December 2018 with our new tenants Tom and Becci Baker.”
During the year, the pub has been completely renovated while still trading.
There is a refurbished bar and dining area which has retained the character of a country pub with new toilets, kitchen and external improvements.
A separate café/deli has been created with the support of the charity, Pub is The Hub and most recently three stylish and modern bed and breakfast rooms.
An adjoining cottage also came with the purchase which has also been renovated into an affordable home made possible with financial support from Hambleton District Council.
Peter said: “We can not thank people who bought shares in the project enough.
“Without their financial backing – to the tune of nearly £250,000 – none of this would have happened.
“Just look at what we have achieved. A thriving pub in the heart of our village the beating heart of Exelby.”
And there has been no let up for Tom and Becci who had to hit the ground running.
Tom said: “We bought into the idea of a community owned pub.
“It’s been hard work, but we have had a great first year with trade improving, CAMRA pub of the month in April and all of the renovations taking place.
“We have got the business going and we are constantly striving to improve on what we can offer all the time from great beers, food and drink to community activities.
“We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and welcoming customers old and new,”
There will be a first birthday party at the pub from 6.30pm on Saturday, November 30.
