North Yorkshire Chief Constable Tim Forber has spoken of the devastation felt by colleagues of PC Rosie prior, who was killed in a collision with an HGV at the weekend.
PC Prior and motorist Ryan Welford died in the incident on the A19 near Barlby on Saturday morning.
Speaking outside Fulford Road Police Station in York yesterday, the Chief Constable said the loss of PC Prior had devastated her loved ones and her family.
He added: “It’s devastated her colleagues here at North Yorkshire Police and we’re extremely grateful to the many messages of condolence that have come in from the community across North Yorkshire.
“Also in my thoughts are the family of Ryan Welford, who also tragically died in the incident yesterday morning.”
The Chief Constable said Rosie had been a police officer for two and a half years and she was a response officer based in York.
He added: “Yesterday morning she wasn’t on duty on a shift, she was off duty, and she came across a road traffic collision on the A19 just south of Thirsk, and she stopped and got out to help.
“And it was whilst doing that that she was tragically killed.”
Mr Forber said the officer “epitomises the very best of British policing”.
“She put the safety of others before her own safety. Helping others was part of her DNA.
“We’re doing everything that we can to support Rosie’s family, as well as Ryan’s family, and to support her colleagues here in North Yorkshire Police who are understandably absolutely devastated by her death.
“We’ll continue to wrap around the organisation.
“We’ll also make sure that Rosie’s memory is never forgotten.
“As I say she epitomised the very best of British policing and the values of North Yorkshire Police.”
Mr Forber urged anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
