A Christmas tree celebrating the centenary of women winning the right to vote has been created by a group of Northallerton knitters.
On December 14, 1918, millions of British women were able to go out and vote for the first time, following the Suffragettes’ long campaign. In honour of the event, Barkers Knit and Natter group has created Christmas tree decorations in purple, green and white; the colours of the women’s Suffrage movement.
The decorations have been added to a tree in Barkers Kitchen Café, in the department store on Northallerton High Street. The knitters say they are happy to sell the decorations and will donate all proceeds to charity.
Barkers Knit and Natter group meets in the department store every Friday from 1.30pm until 3.30pm to meet for a coffee and knit.
They either knit their own items or sometimes work on charity items such as throws, fillets for bras for women who have undergone mastectomies or lumpectomies, as well as cushions, blankets, scarves and poppies.
Over the last five years they have supported various heart and cancer charities including those that Charles Barker, managing director of Barkers, has been involved with and also the Hambleton FoodShare.
Everyone is welcome to join the knitting group and are invited to pop along to the free sessions between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
