Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington is calling on the community to help bring some Christmas cheer to older people who may otherwise spend the season alone.
Through its Shoe Box Appeal 2024, the charity is asking residents to prepare small gift boxes, which will be distributed to older people in the area on Christmas Eve.
With many older people living in isolation, particularly those without close family or friends nearby, the charity says its is mission is to ensure they don’t feel forgotten during the most festive time of year.
Fay Scullion, the new CEO of Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington, said: “Christmas can be an incredibly lonely time for many older people, especially those without anyone to visit or share the day with.
“By donating a small gift box filled with thoughtful items, you’re helping to spread joy and show that someone cares. It’s a simple way to make an older person’s Christmas brighter.”
The gift boxes can include items such as:
- Gloves, scarves, hats, socks
- Toiletries and other small treats
- Puzzles, books, or a diary for the new year
- Christmas decorations, biscuits, or chocolates
When preparing a box, wrap it and the lid separately and attach a label indicating if it’s for a male, female, or non-specific.
Boxes should remain unsealed, with a band around them for easy opening.
The deadline for donations is Monday, December 16.
“This appeal isn’t just about gifts,” Fay Scullion added.
“It’s about showing our older neighbours that they matter and that we’re thinking of them. It’s about spreading kindness and reminding people that even the smallest gesture can have a big impact. Just one small donation can make all the difference; to see an older person’s face light up when they receive their gift is so heart-warming and rewarding.”
