The emergency services were called after a car was driven into the River Leven in Stokesley yesterday.
The incident happened at about 3.15pm in Levenside.
Firefighters from Stokesley and Coulby Newham responded to the incident involved a Nissan Micra driven by an elderly woman.
Eyewitnesses said a man jumped into the river to help the motorist following the incident.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The driver of the car was not trapped in the vehicle but was suffering from chest pains and so was left in the vehicle until ambulance crews arrived.
“Once ambulance crews had carried out an initial check on the driver, crews assisted the female from the vehicle and left her in the care of paramedics.
“Crews made the scene safe and left the incident in the hands of the police.”
