Businesses crowned at Hambleton’s last business awards ceremony

Nine local businesses are celebrating after taking top prizes at Hambleton’s last ever business awards ceremony.

They were honoured for being the top in the district for everything from championing apprentices and family businesses, to providing the best customer service.

It was the sixth annual awards ceremony by the district council – but with local government reorganisation coming next month, and Hambleton merging with the other eight councils in North Yorkshire, it will be the last it hosts.

“These awards have given us a great opportunity to highlight some of the people and businesses here in Hambleton – recognising their range and diversity as well as their achievements and those of the people who work for them,” said Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Wilkinson.

“It’s also given us the chance to reflect on the many success stories and achievements across our district over the last few years as Hambleton District council draws to a close.”

“The quality of the entries has been outstanding – even better than in previous years – and it gave the judges a real challenge in deciding who should be honoured! That was especially true with the Service Excellence award where we received more than 40 nominations.”

Awards went to:

  • Apprenticeship Champion: Amy Wilson from Whitegates Nursery in West Rounton is an apprentice funded through the district council who has developed the most in the role and demonstrated great commitment to the business
  • Sustainability:  Make it Wild from Brompton, is a business making a difference to nature for the long term – giving back and not just about the here and now, supporting conservation and habitat creation through a range of imaginative ideas.
  • Innovation: Gillian Robson and Katy Foxcroft from Tancream near Easingwold worked with top industry experts to develop the world’s first ever daily moisturiser with SPF50 and 5-star UVA.
  • Family Business: Adventure Toys from Northallerton was established in 1989, where people could see toys built and children could try before taking them home; it is now in the hands of the third generation of Metcalfes.
  • Digital: Punk Security from Northallerton was recognised for the great impact it has supporting many other small companies to thrive in a digital age, using their expertise to make others more resilient in this challenging world.
  • Micro Business: Plewsy from Bedale is making a difference operating in an incredibly competitive marketplace and acting as an ambassador for other micro businesses.
  • Vibrant Market Town Ambassador: Peter Nottage of Easingwold has a vision for Easingwold, driving everything forward, promoting positive change and always going the extra mile.

  • Start Up: The Catton Kitchen, from Catton, near Thirsk is a great start up working closely with other businesses, showing commercial acumen right from the beginning and setting a splendid example to others.

There was also a special award to Leader of Hambleton District Council, Councillor Mark Robson, to mark his significant contribution to economic development in the district over the last ten years.

The awards held at the Forum in Northallerton were sponsored by Dales of Thirsk.
