“Bubble cars” return to Wensleydale Railway

Wensleydale Railway has announced the return to service of its class 121 diesel multiple unit.

Affectionately nicknamed “bubble cars” by railway enthusiasts, the class 121 train is one of 16 single-car, double-ended diesel multiple units built in 1960.

121 55032 joined Wensleydale Railway’s heritage diesel fleet in 2015 and won the Railcar of the Year Award by the Railcar Association in 2021.

It has recently undergone extensive maintenance and overhaul including the installation of two new engines and the interior and seating upholstery has been refurbished.

The bubble car will join the railway’s other diesel multiple units on its Leeming Bar to Scruton shuttle services and also on selected trips from Leeming Bar to Leyburn.

Nick Keegan, fundraising and marketing manager at the Wensleydale Railway, said: “Our bubble car is a much-loved train with our customers.

“Like our class 143 Pacer, it has comfortable seating and large windows from which to enjoy our railway’s spectacular scenic views.

“It’s also economical to operate. We’re delighted to have it back in service!.

The railway is currently operating trains three days per week.

Its 2023 running season will end on 1 November and it will operate a special service to the Bedale Community Bonfire & Fireworks event on Saturday 4 November.

It then begins operating its hugely popular THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Rides from 10 November until Christmas Eve.
