Brompton affordable housing scheme recommended for approval

Eight of the garages in Danes Crest, Brompton are to be demolished to make way for the development.

A rare scheme to build a housing development consisting entirely of affordable homes at the heart of a Hambleton village has been recommended for approval.

Hambleton District Council’s planning committee will hear the proposal to in-fill a site off Danes Crest, Brompton, would feature two affordable rental homes and 19 on a rent-to-buy basis.

Leading councillors have repeatedly expressed frustration over proposed estates including far less than the council’s policy of 40 per cent affordable housing on developments of 15 homes or more.

The proposal by Karbon Homes, which manages almost 30,000 properties across the North East of England and Yorkshire, follows the district council identifying an urgent need for smaller and affordable homes.

The developer said there was a particular need for the type of housing in Brompton to help young families onto the ‘housing ladder’ to ensure local labour is retained within the district through the availability of affordable home ownership products.

A Karbon Homes spokesman said it would place a particular emphasis on helping potential buyers into home ownership with the support of the Homes England Rent to Buy scheme.

A consultation over the proposals in the summer found half of the response from residents related to concerns the development would exacerbate flooding in the village, but Karbon Homes said drainage across the greenfield site had been carefully considered with a subterranean tank controlling the outflow of water during periods of increased rainfall.

However, residents have submitted numerous objections to the scheme, which they said would aggravate parking issues in the village and create road safety concerns. It was claimed the planned demolition of eight garages in nearby Danes Crest would create further parking problems.

Resident James Walsh said: “We have massive concerns regarding the potential removal of the grassed area that many children use. Major concerns
over the amount of parking problems which are at breaking point now. If these houses are built, it will put a serious strain on many people who live in this area.

“The volume of traffic would be a safety concern for children playing.”

Karbon Homes said if planning permission is granted, it was hoped the development will be completed by late next year.
