Bedale AFC teams get new kit thanks to housing association

A Hambleton football club famous for its unconventional strips is hoping its latest attire will help it hit the back of the net.

By its own standards. Bedale AFC’s new warm-up tops for its first and reserve teams could be described as being quite normal.

That’s because over the last few seasons the club have worn football strips featuring everything from hot dogs with ketchup and mustard through to a giant carrot and cheese grater, through its sponsorship with Heck Food.

But it turned to housing association Broadacres for the latest support, with a grant of £500 being provided to purchase warm-up tops for both teams, which play in the North Riding League (first team) and the Heck Harrogate & District Football League respect (reserves).

The grant was made through Broadacres’ Community Development Fund which awards grants to assist community-based projects in areas where it has housing.

The blue warm-up tops may not have sausages or carrots on them, but the players are getting a real kick out of them.

Chairman Martyn Coombs said: “We are extremely grateful to Broadacres for helping the football club.

“Like all grassroots teams, we rely on fundraising and the generosity of local organisations and businesses to enable us to operate, and that has been particularly difficult due to Covid-19.

“We had to divert our own funds towards buying Covid-19 mitigation equipment, so being able to buy the warm-up tops through Broadacres’ generosity is very welcome.”

The Broadacres Community Development Fund Panel is made up entirely of its own customers.

One of the customers who agreed the grant to Bedale AFC is Rosemary Colebrook.

She said: “It’s never been more important to us than being able to support grassroots organisations like Bedale AFC who have found it very difficult over the last 12 months.

“We were therefore pleased to be able to make the maximum award to the club and wish them every success in the future.”

Applications for the 2021/22 Community Development are now being accepted.
