As exam results come out this week Hambleton District Council is urging youngsters to consider an apprenticeship.
The authority’s apprentice scheme provides grant aid to small Hambleton based businesses to help create new opportunities for 16 to 24 year olds living in the area.
It was launched in 2012 and has so far helped 163 apprentices in a variety of roles including accounting technician, heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician, site surveying technician, digital marketer, dental nurse, sales and lettings negotiator and in social media.
Jack Gill, 18, from Northallerton started his apprenticeship in January with Aquatic Finatic, following weekend work with the company.
After a year in sixth form Jack decided to pursue a career in Business Marketing and they offered him the post of apprentice Marketing Manager/Retail Assistant, studying Level 3 Digital Marketing at Middlesbrough College.
Owner of Aquatic Finatic, Lin Fitch-Peyton said: “There are so many benefits of employing an apprentice.
“You can train them to meet the specific needs of the business, whilst giving them the opportunity to study, gain experience and qualifications.”
Councillor Peter Wilkinson, Deputy Leader of Hambleton District Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Finance, said: “University may not be for everyone and it is important that the student does not feel trapped into doing something that may not be right for them.
“Apprenticeships offer a real job with hands on experience, a salary and a chance to train whilst you work and we are encouraging and offering local businesses that meet the criteria, financial support if they take on an apprentice.”
The wage subsidy grant is £2,000 and is given to support small businesses that have been trading for at least three months.
Priority is given to those that employ less than 20 employees and the apprenticeship role must be for at least 30 hours a week for one year.
