Police say the man had reportedly stolen some items from shops on the High Street, before assaulting staff and then trying to drive away.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The suspect made off on foot after quick-thinking drivers tried to box him in.
“But we soon caught up with him and he was in custody before he knew it. Thank you to the community for their help with this one!”
The local man in his 40s has been released on bail while the investigation continues.
