Greenpeace members used ladders and ropes to scale the property at Kirby Sigston, near Northallerton, this morning.
Once on the roof they draped the house in 200m of black fabric.
Activists then unfurled a banner stating: “Rishi Sunak – Oil Profits or Our Future?” in front of the house.
The stunt took place this morning as the Prime Minister headed for California on holiday.
The campaign group said: “Climbers are on the roof of Rishi Sunak’s mansion draping it in 200 metres of black fabric to protest against him approving over 100 new oil and gas licences.
“Sunak’s plans will push us closer to climate breakdown while doing nothing to lower bills or boost our energy security.
“It’s time for Sunak to choose between Big Oil’s profits or our future.”
North Yorkshire Police attended the incident and made five arrests.
The force said it was made aware at 8.06am this morning of a number of protesters climbing onto the roof of the Prime Minister’s home in Kirby Sigston.
A large cordon was put in place and specialist police liaison officers were used to bring the protesters down from the roof of the property shortly before 1pm.
Five people, three men and two women, were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and public nuisance.
They currently remain in police custody.
Assistant Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, Elliot Foskett commented: “Shortly after 8am this morning we responded swiftly to reports of protest activity at the Prime Ministers North Yorkshire address.
“There was no threat to the wider public throughout this incident which has now been brought to a safe conclusion.
“The Prime Minster and his family were not at the address at the time of the incident.”
