The A684 is closed at Morton-on-Swale due to flooding.

Motorists have been urged not to attempt to drive through flood water with firefighters called to rescue a number of drivers stuck in the west of the county.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for lower stretches of the River Swale.

An EA spokesperson said: “This flood alert has been issued as levels on the lower River Swale have risen in response to heavy rainfall on Sunday.

“Flooding of low lying land and roads in areas around Maunby, Kirby Wiske and Crakehill is possible today, Monday 2nd November.

“River levels at Maunby will rise this morning and remain high into the afternoon. Please take care in areas in the vicinity of the river, in particular avoid low lying roads and footpaths around Maunby.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”

A more serious flood warning is also in place for the River Ure in the Masham area.
