The A1(M) is shut southbound following a serious collision.
The accident has occurred between junction 51 Leeming Bar and 50 Ripon near Londonderry.
The emergency services are at the scene.
Traffic is being diverted off at Leeming and along the A6055 access road.

Highways England say there are delays of at least 15 minutes.
A spokesperson added: “For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.
“If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.
“Diversion route is signed by the solid circle diversion symbol;
“Exit the A1M at J51 and join the A6055. Proceed along this road for approximately 10 miles as it runs parallel to the A1M. Road users can resume their southbound journeys at A1M J50/A61 junction.”
