Film crew shoots scenes at Wensleydale Railway station

Wensleydale Railway has hosted a film crew working on a new movie.

Actors George Heron and Tony Chapman, cameraman Ben Dodds and Louise Heron, first assistant director, spent time at Leeming Bar Station filming footage for Wenlock Road.

The film is set in the 1970s and tells the story of a boy called George who refuses to let his tough childhood in South Shields determine his future.

This is not the first time that filming has been done at Wensleydale Railway.

Leyburn Station featured in the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small and also in an episode of Great British Car Journeys on Channel 4 in 2019.

Finghall Lane also featured in the All Creatures Great and Small and The Yorkshire Vet television series and was renamed Rainby Halt for filming purposes.

More recently, the ITV’s crime drama Vera was filmed at Redmire and Michael Portillo visited to film for his Great British Railway Journeys series.

Nick Keegan, marketing and fundraising manager at Wensleydale Railway, said: “Wensleydale Railway offers a variety of historic and scenic locations that are perfect for TV and film production.

“From our award-winning restored 1900s Edwardian and Victorian station buildings at Scruton and Leeming Bar that are ideal for period dramas, a growing collection of heritage diesel locomotives and restored carriages, to stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery and views, we have much to offer filmmakers.”

He added: “Heritage and history are at the heart of what we do at Wensleydale Railway. Visitors step back in time at our restored stations and our wonderful period-costumed living history interpreters share historical knowledge about railway life in the 1900s.”

The railway’s 2025 operating season will begin during the February half-term holiday, including starting with its first event of the year, a Valentine’s Day lunch train on 16 February.

Its full running season will start on March 1 and run until October 19. November and December will see the return of THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Rides.
