Farmers gather in Thirsk in protest at inheritance tax change

Hundreds of people gathered in Thirsk today in support of farmers unhappy about inheritance tax changes affecting family farms.

It came as thousands of farmers travelled to London for a rally against the planned changes.

The recent budget announcement means that previously exempt farms worth more than £1m would have to pay an inheritance tax of 20 per cent – half the usual rate of 40 per cent – from April 2026.

Vet Peter Wright, star of the Yorkshire Vet TV series, was among those who gathered in the Market Place.
