Five people have been arrested by police as part of an operation to #tackle cross-border crime.
A suspect vehicle was spotted travelling with a motorcycle ridden by two masked males in the north of the county on Monday evening.
The vehicles split, and officers pursued the motorcycle into Middlesbrough, where it was abandoned, and the suspects fled.
The bike had been reported stolen in Cleveland earlier that day.
The motorcycle was recovered but tthe car evaded capture.
Officers then spotted the car again at around 5.30pm yesterday in Great Ayton, where they tracked it to a petrol station, suspecting it was about to fill up with fuel and then drive off without paying.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “The car was quickly boxed in on the forecourt, but not before it attempted to escape, forcing one of our officers into one of the pumps.
“All five occupants, including the driver, were detained. And our officers recovered face coverings, a hammer, bolt cutters, and quantities of cocaine and cannabis from inside the car.”
The five were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, going equipped for theft and burglary, and possession of class A and class B drugs.
The driver was further arrested for driving without a licence, no insurance, and dangerous driving.
The spokesperson added: “Thankfully, none of our officers were injured during the incident and the group remain in our cells for questioning.
“Our team’s determination paid off, potentially preventing further criminality, and sending a strong message to those intent on carrying our crime in our area.”
