PREVIEW: Flat racing at Thirsk

Thirsk Racecourse.

The Flat racing season continues apace at Thirsk this week with a six-race card on Friday on offer as part of GRIY Superhero Family Day at the track.

Racing will kick off at 2pm with a class four novice stakes over seven furlongs before coming to a close at 4.55pm with an apprentice handicap over the short five furlong trip.

The opening race of the afternoon (2.00) sees a field of ten head to the stall for the seven furlong handicap in class four. It isn’t the most competitive of races but if there is a preference for a debutant in the field then it can go to Blessed Star from the Charlie Johnston yard, no stranger to success with younger runners and has rising star jockey Billy Loughnane booked to ride.

Race two on the card (2.35) is the ten-runner Nursery contest in class six, once again for the two-year-old potential up and coming stars of the future. Griselda was an emphatic winner on debut at Lingfield for trainer George Scott earlier this week and is turned out very quickly to see if that form holds up. Unthinkable rates as the main danger here, a winner at Beverley in May and a good third of six at Catterick when last seen.

A good field of 11 runners will head to the stalls to tackle the six furlong novice stakes in class five at 3.10, race three on the Thirsk card. Lovat Scout is bred for speed and makes his racecourse debut here for the Karl Burke team – a half brother to a five furlong winner and his Dam has also won over five furlongs so he should be quick for a yard that has a good record with newcomers.

Chat Up Line is taken to bounce back from a below-par outing at Beverley earlier this week when finishing sixth to score in race four on Friday (3.45) as six runners tackle the selling handicap over seven furlongs, while the penultimate race on the card (4.20) looks to be all about Emerald’s Pride, who had won four on the bounce before a surprising defeat at Beverley on her seasonal reappearance but back at a track she has won at before, should take all the beating.

Finally, the card comes to a close with the apprentice handicap in class six (4.55) and a small field of five will head to the stalls to take it on. Preference in the finale heads to the Paul Midgely-trained Crooked Crow, who caught the eye from a tough draw when fourth at Beverley on his last spin and has dropped 1lb in the weights here. Of his rivals, Brian The Snail rates the chief threat from the Phillip Morris yard, only just chinned late on when second in a Carlisle handicap on his previous appearance.
