A man has appeared in court charged with causing death by careless driving and perverting the course of justice.

Cameron Ward, 30, is accused of causing the death of Gregory Newcombe in an accident on the A684 near Newton-le-Willows, on July 10, 2022.

Mr Newcombe, 26, from Romanby, Northallerton, was riding his mustard-coloured Harley Davidson on the A684 from Bedale towards Crakehall when it was in collision with a Ford Fiesta that had joined the road from Sinks Lane.

Mr Ward is also charged with causing the death of Mr Newcombe while being uninsured to drive.

The defendant, who appeared at York Magistrates’ Court today, was said to have been driving the Ford Fiesta when the accident occurred.

He is also accused of perverting the course of justice in that he allegedly took out motor insurance after the accident to give the impression that he was insured at the time of the collision.

Mr Ward, of Oak Drive, Sowerby, did not enter any pleas to the charges.

District judge Adrian Lower sent the case to York Crown Court where Mr Ward will appear on August 27. He was released on unconditional bail until then.
