Emergency services come to aid of injured climber

The emergency services were called to help an injured climber after a fall on Saturday.

The incident happened in Scugdal near Swainby.

Members of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) were called by  North Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) to the incident.

A CMRT spokesperson said: “The climber had sustained potentially serious injuries and after treatment by the YAS crew and team members, we secured him within a vacuum mattress and carried him on a rescue stretcher to the top of the crag.

“After transferring him to a Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopter we gave him our best wishes for his recovery process before he was then flown to hospital.”

A total of 18 Cleveland MRT members were involved for approximately two-and-a-half hours.

In a separate incident, CMRT members covering the Ardmoors mountain bike event were alerted to a report of an injured mountain biker not connected with the event.

He had taken a tumble on one of the tracks below the Cleveland Way at Kirby Bank.

Some members were diverted from the Ardmoors while those who had returned to Base and elsewhere following the previous call-out were turned out again.

The rider was treated by team members for a serious leg injury before they stretchered, and wheeled, him for a kilometre to a team Land Rover.

He was then driven to the rendevous point at Beak Hills Farm where we transferred him to an ambulance.
