Fire crews from Bedale, Northallerton and Ripon responded to a car on fire on the A1(M) southbound near Bedale on Saturday morning.
The incident was reported at about 9.25am.
Crews also administered oxygen therapy to the driver who suffered smoke inhalation as a precaution until ambulance staff were able to medically assess them.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus to safely extinguish the fire using a hose reel jet.
A thermal camera was also used to identify hot spots and monitor the engine temperature while water was applied.
The incident was left in the hands of highways who arranged the recovery of the vehicle.
