Labour candidate David Skaith has won the race to become York and North Yorkshire’s first mayor.
He beat Conservative candidate Keane Duncan into second place.
The Labour candidate received 66,761 votes compared to the Tory’s 51,967.
Lib Dem candidate Felicity Cunliffe-Lister came third with 30,867.
The Green Party’s Kevin Foster, a councillor in Catterick, was fourth with 15,188.
The turnout was just 28.89 per cent.
The Labour Party described the result as “truly historic” after the announcement in Northallerton.
A spokesperson said: “This is a truly historic result.
“Keir Starmer’s Labour party is now winning in Rishi Sunak’s backyard.”
The new mayor is a Harrogate-born shopkeeper who is chair of the York High Street Forum.
