Suspected shoplifters caught after chase across fields

Two suspected shoplifters were arrested after an incident at Tesco in Northallerton.

Police received a report of an attempted theft at the store on Tuesday.

Two male offenders left on foot and got into a vehicle that was parked nearby.

Officers stopped the vehicle on the A168 towards Thirsk.

The driver was detained at the scene while the passenger made off into fields.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Further officers were deployed into the area.

“After a muddy search of the fields by our dog unit the passenger was detained.

“After a search of the vehicle several bottles of champagne and washing powder was located within the vehicle.”

Both offenders were arrested and taken into our custody and the vehicle was seized.

The spokesperson added: “A fantastic result and a thank you to Hambleton CCTV for providing information and Tesco for reporting the incident.”
