A service to help people remember loved ones is being held at Ripon Cathedral by two North Yorkshire hospices.

The public is being invited to dedicate lights in memory of family members and friends, while supporting local hospice care provided by Hambleton and Richmondshire-based Herriot Hospice Homecare and Harrogate-district based Saint Michael’s Hospice.

The lights will be illuminated in the cathedral at the Light up a Life event on Sunday, December 10.

The service will feature music from local ensembles, readings and time for reflection, with bereavement experts on hand for those who wish to talk.

Families are welcome to attend with special opportunities for young people to be a part of the event.

During the service, those who would like to can place messages to loved ones they are remembering on the  tree at the centre of the cathedral.

Herriot Hospice Homecare and Saint Michael’s family of services, which also includes wellbeing support from Just ‘B’, provide compassionate, expert care and support for families living with terminal illness across the Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire districts of North Yorkshire, as well as beyond.

To continue offering care and support, the charity benefits from the generosity of its community as the majority of the hospice’s care and support is funded by them.

Chief executive of the charity, Tony Collins said: “We know how much Light up a Life means to the families we’ve cared for and our wider community, and it means so much to us too.

“We treasure every dedication as a special tribute to loved ones, and hugely appreciate the generous gifts which help our community’s lights shine on through our care.”
