A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson, affray and assault following an incident at a doctor’s surgery in the village of Ampleforth.
Police received a call at around 12.25pm today to a report of a man who had caused damaged to the surgery by setting fire to it and had assaulted a member of staff.
He was also in possession of a knife and indicated that he intended to harm himself.
Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene and a cordon was put in place to protect members of the public.
Police said officers negotiated with the suspect to help resolve the situation safely.
At around 1.35pm police officers restrained the man and he was arrested and taken into custody.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Crews from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton and Thirsk attended the incident.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the surgery suffered fire, heat and smoke damage to the lobby area.
Crews used a hose reel jet, four breathing apparatus, thermal imaging camera, positive pressure ventilation fan and various ladders.
They added “A male was left in care of paramedics and police. The cause is believed to be deliberate.”
No serious injuries were reported.
