A digital forensic lab has opened in Northallerton.
The laboratory has been opened by US technology company CACI and will providing specialist digital forensics services to UK police forces.
A launch event last week was attended by representatives from all police forces in the region.
Richard Cockerill, operations director of CACI Ltd’s digital forensics laboratory, said: “Over 90 per cent of crimes involve a digital component, which has resulted in unprecedented demand placed on police digital forensics units (DFUs) supporting criminal investigations”.
He added: ““We acknowledge that the digital revolution has led to an increased burden on DFUs, as demand for services and continuous changes in technology has resulted in significant challenges to this industry.
“CACI is committed to collaborating with law enforcement organisations to help increase their capacity for dealing with digital forensic investigations, to support them with accreditation, to help maximise the efficiency of technology and infrastructure used for digital investigations and finally to help develop the effectiveness of processes used in digital forensic laboratories.
The mayor of Northallerton, Councillor Phil Eames, attended the launch event.
He said: “Northallerton Town Council is delighted that CACI has decided to base its new digital forensics laboratory in Northallerton, which will provide an excellent resource for our local police forces.
“Following on from space satellite company Ambasat and the Centre For Digital Innovation (C4DI), we look forward to Northallerton becoming an important centre for advanced technologies.”
