A fundraising campaign is continuing to ensure the former Lambert Memorial Hospital in Thirsk can open its doors later this year as a hospice.
Herriot Hospice Homecare has raised more than £1m of the £1.7m needed to transform the site after the building was gifted to the charity in 2019 by Hambleton District Council.
Leader of Hambleton District Council, Mark Robson, joined Herriot Chief Executive, Tony Collins, this March to see construction work begin at Herriot Hospice@The Lambert, which will offer care for local people affected by terminal illness, as well as a range of emotional wellbeing services for children, young people and adults.
Hambleton council leader, Mark Robson, said: “In transferring the Lambert building to Herriot Hospice Homecare, we wanted to give a gift that would keep on giving for our community.
“It is therefore truly heartening to know that, once open, Herriot Hospice@The Lambert will offer essential services across our rural communities for generations to come.
“It is inspiring to see the progress of the project, which has been made possible by the significant support of the community so far, and it is clear how vital this continued support is if we are to see our hospice open for local people this year.”
Herriot chief executive Tony Collins said: “Remarkable community support such as that of Hambleton District Council has paved the way for this exciting and much-needed project to bring hospice care closer to home for local people.
“We are delighted that the council responded to the community’s calls to bring the much-loved Lambert back into use, gifting the building and a generous £90,000 to enable Herriot to embark on this substantial and hugely meaningful project.
“Now is a crucial time for the project; we need local people, groups and businesses to continue backing our fundraising appeal to help us reach our goal and ensure we can open doors this year.”
