New power cables had to be installed because Rishi Sunak’s new heated swimming pool at his Hambleton home uses so much energy, according to reports.

The local electricity network had to be upgraded to meet the pool’s needs at the mansion near Northallerton, the Guardian reported at the weekend.

The Prime Minister and Richmond MP was granted permission to build the pool, plus gym and tennis court beside his historic constituency home in 2021, despite claims the development would harm the setting of the grade II listed property.

Engineers had to install a new connection to the National Grid that runs across open fields.

It is understood Mr Sunak will pay for the electricity upgrade work personally, in addition to meeting the ongoing cost of heating the 12-metre pool.

Richmond county councillor Stuart Parsons said the Prime Minister should be ashamed of himself for “flaunting his wealth” at a time when so many families were struggling.

“What kind of a message does this send to those members of the public who do to the cost of living crisis can’t afford to use their local swimming pool.

“Hopefully Northern Powergrid will have charged him fully for the extra connections because if it’s on my bill I’ll be furious.”

A spokesperson for the MP declined to comment on the work this morning.
