A young Northallerton boxer has won a bronze medal fighting for England at the European Schools (12-14 years of age) Boxing Championships.
Hanna Holden, who attends Northallerton School, only took up boxing in 2019.
Her interest was stalled through 2020 due to Covid, however she restarted training as restrictions were relaxed and in November 2021 moved to the Phil Thomas School of Boxing in Middlesbrough under the head coach Craig Carney.
Hanna won the England Championships in May of this year for the 2009 year of birth under 57 category which allowed her to attend the National Development Programme.
Although too young to represent England in the Tri-Nation Championships, the 13-year-old was eligible to try out for the England squad to represent her country in the European Schools Championships.
She was successful in the trials and, along with 20 other children, was selected to represent England in Turkey at the Championships which took place last month.
Hanna beat a tough opponent from Lithuania to qualify for a place in the semi-finals but lost out on points to an opponent from Turkey who was fighting in front of her home crowd and who went onto win the finals through a first round stoppage.
As a result, Hanna secured her first podium place on the international stage and won bronze for England.
Dad John said: “This was Hanna’s first year of real competition and she plans to return to training under Craig Carney after a short rest, focussing on the new season which will begin with the club’s home show in late September, followed by an all female open meet in Ireland in October. ”
