The floodlights at Thirsk hockey pitch have been replaced with new climate friendly LED lights.
The hockey pitch, which is based at Thirsk School and Sixth Form College, is benefitting from £32,000 council funding which will pay for the purchase and installation of the new lights.
Councillor Mark Robson, leader of the council and the local councillor for Sowerby and Topcliffe, said: “This is a really sound investment, as it is not only providing an improved lighting option but also helping in our ongoing commitment to tackling climate change across Hambleton.
“As the ward member for Sowerby and Topcliffe, I know this facility is important and well used by the local community and hope the new lights mean the pitch continues to be used for many years to come.”
LED is an improved lighting technology, replacing the existing halogen lamps, which have been manufactured to order.
As well as improving the lighting quality for those using the pitch, energy consumption will be reduced by around 60%, saving approximately two tonnes of carbon each year.
It is anticipated the subsequent savings on energy and servicing costs will mean that the scheme will be paid for in four years’ time.
