Hambleton District Council has announced it is making car parking free for four weeks.
Parking in all district council car park will be free from December 1 to January 4 – in Northallerton, Thirsk, Stokesley, Bedale, Great Ayton and Easingwold.
It is hoped the move will encourage people to shop in the district’s market towns in the build up to Christmas and support local businesses as they emerge from the pandemic.
“These past couple of years has been tough for everyone and the council wants to do all it can to support residents and businesses,” said chief executive, Dr Justin Ives.
“We hope that suspending parking charges for a month in the build up to and immediately after Christmas will encourage shoppers to use the shops, restaurants and cafes our market towns offer for both Christmas shopping and festive trips out.”
The free festive parking will apply to over 900 car parking bays across the District Council’s car parks, with the council encouraging the use of the time limits in place in dedicated short stay only car parks.
The district council no longer manages Crosby Road car park in Northallerton, therefore this car park is not subject to free parking.
