More than 5,000 people have now signed a petition calling for the Government to change the law on supplying drugs to children — with supporters urged to check their junk email folders to ensure their signature counts.
The petition has been launched by Kerry Roberts, whose 15-year-old daughter Leah Heyes collapsed after taking the drug known as ecstasy in Northallerton’s Applegarth car park in May 2019.
Kerry is aiming to get 100,000 people to sign to persuade the Government to look at changing the law making it a specific offence to supply drugs to children under 16.
She said: “I want to see a change in the law to make clear that any person under the age of 16 cannot consent to taking illegal substances.
“This will have a two pronged effect in keeping young people safe but also holding those who supply accountable for death and serious injury as a result.”
Kerry and partner James Norton have urged supporters signing the petition to check their junk folders as confirmation emails thet need to be responded to from the official petition website have been going into this folder.
Currently there is no difference in sentencing whether a dealer supplies to an adult or to a child.
