The A1(M) is closed southbound between J47 and J48 near Boroughbridge following a serious collision.
Emergency services are at the scene of the incident which happened at 7.48am today and involved a single vehicle.
The driver and passengers of the vehicle are believed to have serious, but not life threatening, injuries.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police.
