A Northallerton pub has decided not to open on two potentially busy days over the festive period due to ‘tier jumpers’.
Oddfellows Arms says it has made the decision to close on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve due a small minority of people not following the rules.
It said in a statement posted on social media: “Due to the behaviour of a small minority this week who have not followed the rules around covid safety, we have made the decision to close on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
“The safety of our staff and customers is our first priority and unfortunately we do not feel that we can manage the potentially busy days like these effectively from a covid stand point at this time.”
The management said it was important that customers treated each other and staff with respect and understanding during these difficult times.
They added: “It has come to light that some people have been crossing tiers in order to go out drinking.
“We are working alongside the police to ensure this does not happen again and will be reviewing our procedures to ensure that all those who visit us feel safe within our walls.”
The pub added: “People who don’t give a damn for your health are tier jumping and I will not stand for it.
“It’s crushing from a business perspective but like all you good folks we know the light at the end of the tunnel is there if we do the right thing.”
Under current tier 2 restrictions, pubs can only serve alcohol with a meal.
Pubs and restaurants in tier 3 areas can only open to serve takeaways.
People living in tier 3 areas have been told to avoid travelling.
