A video posted online by a Bedale cafe has gone viral with the clip being watched by more than 23 million people.
The video was posted on the Facebook page of boutique cafe Institution, in the town’s Market Place, by owner Nigel Parkin last month.
At the latest count, the post had reached almost 30 million people and the three-second clip had been watched by 23.3 million social media users.
Nigel said the business, like many, was reasonably active on social
media, using it to engage with local customers.
He said in addition to the usual posts, keeping customers
informed of offers and promotions, the cafe had also enjoyed sharing humour.
Nigel added: “People are sold to all the time on social media, so creating the odd mind smile is far more fulfilling.
“I believe people will remember you more if you can make them laugh rather than engaging in hard sell.”
Throughout 2020, Institution has increased its positive posts, particularly on Facebook, in a bid to lift people’s spirits.
Commenting on the video, Nigel said: “The knock on effect has been fascinating – content that we posted a few years ago is now getting new engagements, follower count has increased by almost 400 per cent and we’re getting messages from all over the world thanking us for making them smile.
“We’ve even taken phone calls from from a couple of people in London, wondering where we are based.
The owner said they have been building this type of content for more than five years so they have a solid foundation and a lot of posts for their new followers to enjoy.
He added: “Social media is a vital tool in the armoury of a small business, the key is be consistent, understand your customers and engage with them with content that keeps the, coming back.”
